The original inhabitants of the Sydney area are the proud Gadigal people. The territories of the Gadigal people cover the entirety of Sydney harbour (Port Jackson), the inner west, and the eastern suburbs and extend all down south to Botany Bay.
29 clans/groups within the Sydney metropolitan area are collectively known as the Eora nation. The ‘Eora people’ was the name given to the coastal Aboriginal peoples around Sydney. ‘Eora’ means ‘here’ or ‘from this place'. The Gadigal are a clan of the Eora Nation.
In the wake of the first fleet's arrival, the aboriginal communities were as generous as they were combative towards the colonisers who had now called their land home. The harbour maintained its importance to all peoples needs long after settlers made their mark Fishing, hunting, and camping grounds hold their cultural significance to this day
Despite such horrific impacts of first contact and the years that followed, the Gadigal culture continues to thrive. As Sydney grew from town to city to world-renowned, the surrounding clans from around NSW gathered together to live, prosper, and forge relations in a new Australia.
